Derek Mills
Apple Grower, Hocking Hills Orchard in Logan, OH
Derek Mills grows heirloom apples with his wife, Lisa, at their Hocking Hills Orchard in southeastern Ohio. Derek shares, “My father retired from the U.S. Air Force and I was in the U.S. Army so I have lived all around the world. Everywhere I have lived I enjoyed eating the local produce and exploring the region. In the mid-1980s I read a story about George Washington’s favorite apple. I wrote the author of the article to ask him how he knew that particular bit of information. He (who it was escapes me now, I think it was Henry Converse) told me about NAFEX and the goal of the group. I joined and one thing led to another. I grafted Newtown Pippin, then Esopus Spitzenberg, then Black Gilliflower, and so on. Today I grow 1,800 apple varieties from countries all around the world.” Find Derek and his apples on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/HockingHillsOrchard/
